Wetlands Biodiversity Protection and Sustainable Use in China

Project Background

For half a century, as sediments from the Yangtze River flooded into the Dongting Lake, the riverbed raised and bottomland arouse. Therefore, both area and volume of the Dongting Lake decreased. Meanwhile, as a result of reclamations, ditches and river ways into the lake, man-made forests invasion, pollutants influx, etc., ecological problems in natural Dongting Lake wetland arouse such as landscape fragmentation and function degradation. Therefore, the Chinese government, Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) started the project of Wetland Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use in China.
Project Objectives
The project aims to seek a sustainable development road beneficial to socio-economic development and biodiversity protection of Dongting Lake wetland.
Project Partners
The Chinese partners are Hunan Forestry Department and Hunan Academy of Forestry, and foreign partners were Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Project Achievements
Two works are published, namely, Resources and Environment of Dongting Lake Wetland and Monitoring of Vertebrate and Bird Resources in Dongting Lake Resources, among which the former hassummarized the formation and evolution of Dongting Lake, resources of wetland animals and plants, strategy of sustainable management, while the latterprovides representative monitoring sites which has covered the whole Dongting and describes morphological characteristics of 255 birds and habitats.
