Wuhan University, China PP

Wuhan University was founded in 1893 and is a key university directly under the administration of the Education Ministry of the People's Republic of China. The university now has 5,000-odd teachers, including 3,000-odd professes and associate professors, 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences , 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

During the past 10 years, Wuhan University completed thousands of natural sciences research projects, among which 600-odd ones won various awards including 32 awards of the state's natural sciences, the state's invention and the state's science-and-technology progress, and 574 ministerial or provincial awards. With an enrollment of over 40,000 full time students, the university is currently made up of 26 colleges.

College of Water Resources and Hydro power is one of the most important ones in the university, and is one of the academy centers in the hydraulic and hydro-electric field in China. In the college, there are 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 state key specialties and a national key laboratory.

In the past decades, College of Water Resources and Hydro power involved researches in almost all large scale hydraulic projects in China and established close relations with the industry. Most famous achievements include sediment treatment in Gezhouba project on the Yangtze river, numerical and physical model to simulate sediment deposition process of the Three Gorges project and optimized operation of Danjiangkou reservoir on the Han river. These achievement won the reputation in the industry. In the research group led by Prof. Zhang, main research programs and topics related with flood, sediment transport fields recent years cover:

-   1-D and 2-D flood flow models (CSMS) and coupling, which are developed in the ANFAS project.
-  1-D and 2-D movable bed models, used for river bed deformation and sediment deposition process simulation in reservoirs.
-   1-D river-net model, used for flood simulation in river net.
-   Dam breach model, used for the simulation of dam breach flood.
ANN models, used for rainfall-runoff forecasting, flood propagation, bed deformation forecasting based on Artificial Neural Network theory.
