The ASEM Seminar on Water Resources Management in the Context of Urbanisation took place on 22-23 May 2014 in Changsha, China. It was designed to inject a new dynamism into the exchange and cooperation among ASEM partners in improving sustainable water management by providing a platform for policy exchange, information sharing, and the development of a market of technology and products.

Participants from businesses, universities, NGOs, international organisations and government agencies from ASEM member countries attended this one-and–a-half day seminar. They shared experiences, exchanged thoughts and ideas and reflected on different methods of water resource management, meant to balance supply and demand of water resources, provide safe drinking water and water sanitation, enhance public health, combat pollution and minimise the impact of water-related natural disasters under extreme climatic conditions.

Mr HE Xiuming, Deputy Secretary General of the ASEM Water Resources Research and Development Center (ASEMWATER), the main organiser of the seminar, stressed the importance of cooperation in the field of water resource management across Asia and Europe, particularly in view of rapid urban development. Such a seminar helps generate the information exchang and paved way for future collaborations among the ASEM countries.

Mr Karsten WARNECKE, Deputy Executive Director of the co-sponsoring organisation, Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), acknowledged the importance of the topic, which was recognised by the ASEM Foreign Ministers at the last, 11th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in November 2013 in New Delhi, India. He also highlgihted that the seminar presents a timely addition to ASEF’s environment portfolio, as for the first time ASEF is involved in the increasingly important topic of water management.

The outcomes of the seminar were captured in the ChangshaDelaration, which was issued at the end of the seminar. It will bepresented to the 10th ASEM Summit in October 2014 in Milan, Italy and to the next 5th ASEM Environment Ministers’ Meeting.
